Traditional Oriental Medicine: What is Hara Diagnosis

June 15, 2023

Hara 腹 : translates as abdomen

Evolving from Traditional Chinese Medicine, Hara Diagnosis is common in traditional Japanese medicine. Using this discipline, an acupuncturist will palpate the patient’s abdomen as a diagnostic method. The feedback the practitioner receives gives them information about the patient’s health status. This may relate to the flow of Qi (energetic life force), the state of abdominal organs, or the status of connective tissue.

The acupuncturist is able to assess this information which allows them to make connections about how the organs, energy flow, and areas of restriction, deficiency, or excess relate to each other and other areas in the body. This knowledge then informs the rest of the acupuncture treatment. “Your acupuncturist may then palpate areas head, neck, chest, and spine to help determine how your body is responding to treatment.” – Katy Frame, Acupuncturist

Our Acupuncturist here at Sadhana Health utilizes Hara diagnosis, along with Secondary Vessels, Balancing Method, NADA, and Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat our patients.
