Modalities: What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Ancient healing in a modern setting

Rooted in Taoist philosophy, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient healing system gained from thousands of years of observation, investigation, and clinical experience.

Its modalities can include Acupuncture, Gua Sha, Cupping, and Herbal Medicine. It is a truly holistic system that sees the body-mind processes as an integrated whole. TCM views the environment, a person’s mental-emotional state, diet, and lifestyle as equally important factors in a person’s well-being; and when balanced, lead to harmony and a healthy existence. Lifestyle, injury, and other factors can contribute to shifting our systems out of balance resulting in symptoms such as pain, fatigue, or insomnia. TCM is an incredible tool for getting your body back into homeostasis*.

Acupuncture, a key component of TCM has been practiced for over 2,500 years. It focuses on balancing the body’s energy, called Qi, that naturally flows throughout the body. When this flow is disturbed, disharmony and illness can occur.  By inserting fine hair-thin needles into the body and so redirecting the movement of energy, Acupuncture can restore harmony and balance to body, mind and spirit.

To diagnose the underlying imbalance responsible for the symptoms, we look for patterns through observation and questions. What can seem to be unrelated details, such as temperature, your sleep schedule, and food cravings, can together reveal a pattern from which to develop a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Acupuncture has gained widespread acceptance in the western world for its numerous health benefits. We are excited to share this intelligent medicine with you here at Sadhana Health. *Homeostasis: any self-regulating process by which biological systems tend to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are optimal for survival. If homeostasis is successful, life continues; if unsuccessful, disaster or death ensues. The stability attained is actually a dynamic equilibrium, in which continuous change occurs yet relatively uniform conditions prevail.
